"One of the big things when you show in the ring is to be a little more patient — in between maneuvers, in between your stops and your spins — be more patient. Walk a little ways before you lope off. Those are little things that they are not going to hit you for. You don’t lose points. But, it makes your horse be relaxed when you show him, and it gives him a chance to think in between maneuvers. Then, they dont get rattled in the show pen and you can keep showing. Stay real correct and don’t “ride around” anything, especially if you are at a little show that maybe doesn’t mean as much to win. If you need to fix something, go ahead and fix it, and then it pays down the line for the bigger shows..."

The Temecula-based trainer ended the year with SCRCHA titles on threee different horses owned by Rocking J Ranch, including RJ Wheres My Sock (Junior Ranch Riding), Very Smart Luck (Open Herd, Open Bridle) and Soula Shining Star (Open Two Rein). Roy Rich finished atop a handful of classes with Candy Flock’s Say No Way (SCRCHA Open Hackamore) and Sarah Bradley’s Very Smart And Sure (both NRCHA and SCRCHA Open Two Rein), respectively. Rich also rode Gabriel Stanton’s Fresnos Indian Chief to the SCRCHA Open Two Rein reserve, and he took the Barbara Hastings-owned Mr Peppy Jeep to the AQHA Senior Working Cow Horse title.

"TEMECULA – Ever since he worked for Doug Williamson, Roy Rich had wanted to train a Hickorys Indian Pep bred horse. He found Fresnos Indian Chief for client Sandi Heitritter almost two years ago at CSU Fresno, and he proved himself right Oct. 17 when he won the Southern California Reined Cow Horse Association Saddle Shootout open division championship.

After a career of showing Arabians, mostly in park classes and some western pleasure, Roy, then 13, went down DePortola Road to his first reining lesson at Todd Crawford’s.
“I remember how fast that horse spun,” he says. “Oh, my gosh. That was fun.” He has been learning and earning since. He relinquished his amateur card six years ago, and after guidance from Mark Matson, Mike Berg, Doug Williamson and Glen Aspinal, Roy stepped out onto his own last August. His business has grown from four horses in training to 22 in less than six months. He has five students who want to compete locally, and he’s eager to help them. |
